Nottinghamshire cement plant manager hands baton on after 30 years with company

July 5, 2018

A new manager has taken charge at Nottinghamshire’s cement plant. Steve Odell steps up from his previous role as Production Manager to take over from Chris Stephens who has held the role of Plant Manager for 12 years.

After nearly 30 years with the company, the Tarmac Barnstone cement plant team has said farewell to Chris Stephens. Chris’s career with the company saw him spend 12 years at Barnstone, 11 years at the Cookstown plant in Northern Ireland, and six years at the company’s former site in Plymstock, near Plymouth – his hometown.

Commenting on his retirement, Chris says: “I am extremely proud to have overseen the expansion of Barnstone – An expansion which has gone a long way in reinforcing the plant’s vital role in the Tarmac UK cement site portfolio. It’s great to see Steve taking over and wish him and the team all the best for the future.”

Steve Odell started working for the company – Blue Circle as it was then – back in 1994 as a works chemist. Steve has worked in a variety of roles and played a key part in the evolution of the Barnstone Plant from a cement manufacturing site to a specialist blending and grinding site as it is now. Steve will take over a team of over 60 including production and maintenance teams, laboratory technicians, and packing plant operators.

Speaking about his new role, Steve said: “Having been involved closely in the development of Barnstone Plant over many years, it is with great pleasure that I am taking on the role of Plant Manager.

“Not only am I looking forward to further honing and developing the operation here, but I am also looking forward to ensuring Barnstone Plant continues to play active role in the local community.”
